Winter Favourites 2020

Hello everyone, I hope you are well?

Now it’s most definitely Spring, I thought it was the perfect time to write up my Winter favourites. How was winter for you? It only snowed once where I live and it only lasted a couple of hours which was kinda sad as I LOVE snow, so I really hope we get some snow next winter! I guess my favourite months were December/January time as everything seemed a little less stressful and scary, I had more free time than in November so I spent a lot more time sewing, baking and trying to stay somewhat consistent with my blog schedule. I think spending more time doing the things I love has really helped my mental health and is helping me to think more positively as it gives me something to focus on and to take my mind off it all.

Baking

One of my 2020 goals is to make more time to do the things that make me happy. I got back into baking in January, and I just love it! I bake about 2 or 3 times a week now and I’m really enjoying it, especially testing out new things and creating my own recipes. I’ve posted a couple of recipes here on my blog recently including Fairy Cakes and Shortbread Hearts.

Hand mixer

As I’ve been baking more, I decided to invest in a hand mixer, I got the Russel Hobbs 14451 for only £12.99 on Amazon, which was a great price and it works perfectly for what I need.

Sims 4

As I’ve had a little more free time recently I’ve been playing Sims 4 as I hadn’t actually played for a couple of months as 2019 was quite a busy year for me. There was a sale in February, so I decided to get a couple of the new packs that I had been saving up for, Island Living, Realm of Magic, Discover University, and Tiny Living. I feel like I’m going to be playing Sims 4 a lot more during the Spring as a way to escape, I love building houses and interior design, and with the new packs I can send my sims to university, make my Sim a mermaid or learn magic. I’m also super excited for the new Arts & Crafts/Knitting pack, I can’t wait for my sims to be able to knit and I love the build mode items, but I really hope they do add a sewing machine as well sometime in the future as that would be awesome!

Hot Chocolate

I love hot chocolate, but this year I really love hot chocolate, I’m pretty sure I’ve already had more hot chocolate in 2020 than the last 3 years combined! 😂 My favourite is and always has been Cadburys topped with whipped cream and marshmallows. Comment below, what is your favourite hot drink?

Cherry Blossom by Emily M

🌸 Cherry Blossoms 🌸

I would usually count this as a Spring thing, but because of the weather, my cherry blossom tree flowered in January/February instead of March this year.‍ Either way it’s still really pretty and cheered me up every time I opened the curtains. I think one day I’d love to have a garden filled with cherry blossom trees.

Books:

Anne of Green Gables

Last year I read the Emily of New Moon series and I loved it (you can read my review here)! So I really wanted to read the Anne of Green Gables series too as it’s written by the same author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. Last month I read the first book of the series: Anne of Green Gables, and I’m so excited to read the rest of the series later this year. Like Emily of New Moon, Anne of Green Gables is also set in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the late 19th century. I feel like at the moment I am especially drawn to classics, as with the current situation, books that are set in the present day just don’t feel realistic, has anyone else been feeling the same?

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert are looking to adopt a boy from the orphanage, but a message gets muddled and they end up with a girl, Anne Shirley. Like Emily of New Moon, Anne is very imaginative, and even though they don’t (as far as I know so far) cross paths in the series, I feel like they would be great friends as they have a lot of similarities, although Anne is much more talkative – there are several pages in my copy that are entirely just Anne speaking! Anne’s also a little quirky and clumsy which I think is sweet, and she shows that it’s ok not to be perfect all the time. The first book follows Anne’s life from arriving at Green Gables age 11, until she finishes High School at Queen’s age 16 (which is the same school featured in Emily of New Moon). I really like how the book is made up of lots of little delightful stories, from Anne and Diana playing in the woods, the incident of the raspberry cordial, to Gilbert saving Anne from drowning in the river. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers as I don’t want to ruin it for you if you’ve not read it yet, but let’s just say the last few chapters made me cry a little bit.

I really like how L. M. Montgomery wrote her novels in such a way that they are suitable to read at any age, and how the characters grow up through the series. I know there’s a series called Anne With An E on Netflix based on the books and I really want to watch it so I’m thinking about getting Netflix soon if I run out of things to watch on the tv. Have you seen it? Did you like it? Let me know in the comments below.

TV Shows:

Father Brown

One of my favourite parts of the new year is being able to watch a new season of Father Brown, I love all the characters and the screenwriting is fantastic, it’s equal parts mystery, heart-warming and relaxing, so I always look forward to January. At the start of the year Alibi and Drama were both showing the series from the first ever episode, so I decided to watch them all again, which I’m very glad I did now as it gives me something to do during self-isolation. Do you have a series you like to rewatch? For me it’s Friends, Castle, Father Brown and House of Anubis. 💛

Find Me in Paris

I first started watching Find Me in Paris near the end of 2019, and I spoke about it a little in my 2019 Favourites. Last month the 2nd season was aired on Nickelodeon in the UK, and it was definitely worth waiting for. I’m so excited for season 3! In the final episode after Frank and Thea open a time rip, the portal goes wrong and Lena, Ines, Jeff and Isaac are stuck in 1983! I love the 80s, especially the music and some (but not all) of the fashion, so I’m really looking forward to the next season.

Just Add Magic

Recently, Nickelodeon also started airing season 2 of Just Add Magic and I’m really enjoying it so far, it was so interesting finding out Chuck’s story and Becky’s secret, and I really liked how they gave little clues so you could almost guess what was going to happen next. You can currently watch all three seasons and the spin-off for free on Amazon, you don’t even need a prime membership! I’m not sure how long this will be available for, but if you’re looking for a new series to watch I would definitely recommend Just Add Magic.

Frankie Drake Mysteries

This is another of my favourite mystery series. Frankie and her best friend Trudy are private investigators in 1920s Canada. I just watched the last episode of season 3 last week, and I’m kinda sad it won’t be on next week, but I do hope there will be a fourth season. I think it’s really cool how they include famous people from the 20s as characters, such as Hemingway, Debussy and Agatha Christie.

Five Bedrooms

This is another series I just finished watching recently. It’s an Australian sitcom/drama where a group of people sitting at the singles table at a wedding decide to buy a house together to get on the property ladder. For the first few episodes, each one is based on a different character with them narrating the episode. I really enjoyed this series and I hope they make a second season as they left a couple of cliff-hangers and future storylines in the last episode.

Music:

Selena Gomez ~ Rare

Selena Gomez’s new album was released in January and I managed to get the deluxe version on Amazon for £10.99! I love all the songs on the album, so it’s hard to pick a favourite song, and I’ve pretty much been playing the album on repeat when I’m sewing.

Frozen 2

Yes I know Frozen 2 came out in November, but I still love the soundtrack and I can’t wait to watch it again, I hope it comes on Sky Premiere soon. 🤞🏻 My favourite song at the moment is Do The Next Right Thing.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post! I’m currently aiming to continue posting weekly, on Saturdays at 4pm GMT, with a mixture of craft, sewing and knitting tutorials, book reviews, baking recipes and more 💛

      1. I’m thinking about getting Disney Plus, but I already have Sky Kids and Movies so I can download a lot of Disney already, and I also have a lot of my favourites on dvd, it does sound cool though, and I heard they have Hannah Montana on there and it’s been years since I’ve watched that ☺️💛
