Creating Outfits Inspired by Matilda from My Own Wardrobe

Hello everyone!

For World Book Day this year I decided to create outfits inspired by the 1996 movie version of Matilda only using clothes I already had in my wardrobe.

One of my favourite parts of World Book Day is getting creative with the costumes. I’ve never actually done a Matilda costume before even though I had planned to twice but both times I ended up doing something else as I could not find a red ribbon! Luckily this year after a LOT of searching I did manage to find one although it was a little tricky to tie as it wasn’t quite long enough. And one big difference between me now and me the previous two times I planned to do this costume is that I don’t have a fringe anymore and my hair is quite a lot longer, yep for most of my childhood my hair looked pretty much identical to Matilda’s! So instead this year I am taking inspiration from the outfits rather than aiming for an exact recreation.

As all of the clothes featured in this post are from past collections, I won’t be able to include product links, but you can probably find similar items on the high-street or thrifting.

Also, as I don’t want to be copyrighted, I will only be posting my recreations here on my blog, but you can click here and head over to my Pinterest to see side by side comparisons with the inspiration from the movie.

Now without further ado, let’s get on with the post!

During the movie, Matilda wears many blue dresses and occasionally pairs her outfits with cream and light blue cardigans. I don’t actually have many dresses in my wardrobe as I’m more of a jeans and t-shirt or sweatshirt and leggings kind of person, so for this outfit I paired a navy heart print t-shirt dress from F&F with a cream butterfly print cardigan from Tu.

You probably won’t believe this, but I actually took this photo myself and I think it came out surprisingly well! I linked my camera up to my phone on the canon app so that I could use it as a remote. This was pretty fun and I think I will probably use this technique again, I definitely recommend giving it a go, although it can be a little tricky getting it to focus through the app as you can’t make adjustments to the camera.

Now this outfit is inspired by both Matilda’s friend Lavender and Miss Honey. I hadn’t noticed until I was planning my outfits how similar the two characters outfits are, they both wear pink t-shirts with denim dungarees during three different scenes in the film.

My t-shirt is from Tu and my dungarees are from H&M.

And the dungarees are back again! I do really love these dungarees so I’m a huge fan of all the dungaree outfits featured in this movie. Matilda wears her dungarees with a floral top during two scenes in the movie, one at the restaurant and also at home reading a book.

For this outfit I paired the H&M dungarees with a floral ribbed t-shirt from Next.

My last outfit is inspired by the Little Bitty Pretty One scene where Matilda uses her powers to make the spoon and playing cards fly, which is my favourite scene in the whole movie! This outfit is quite simple, just a blue stripy t-shirt and jeans which was pretty easy to recreate as it’s already one of my go-to outfits in my everyday life. My t-shirt is from Next and the jeans are from H&M.

I hope you enjoyed this post! Would you like to see more posts like this? This was pretty fun so I wouldn’t mind trying it again in the future, maybe recreating images/frames from the movie as well as the outfits too?

Also comment below which version of Matilda do you prefer? The book, the movie or the musical? For me it’s got to be the movie, I’ve always loved it, it’s been one of my favourites since I was really little so I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen it.

I’m currently aiming to post weekly, on Saturdays at 4pm GMT, with a mixture of craft, sewing and knitting tutorials, book reviews, baking recipes and more!
