Social Saturday; how to still hangout with your friends

One of the hardest things about lockdown is not being able to visit your friends and family, but there are still ways you can be “together” without leaving your homes.

Households come in different sizes but for many this can be an incredibly lonely time, so try to send a quick text, call or video call to have a chat, check up on them and let them know you’re still there for them.

Watch something together

If you both have Netflix, there is a google chrome extension where you can watch a movie together and chat. But you can also do this the old-fashioned way, find a movie or show or YouTube video that you both have access to and want to watch, sync start times and chat through text or video chat. You could even do something as simple as watching the clouds together, to remember no matter where we are, we are still under the same sky, plus it’s actually kinda relaxing!

Multiplayer games

If games are your thing there are plenty of multiplayer games online and on games consoles. For example, there are games you can play with a friend or group in Snapchat and Facebook Messenger. Animal Crossing New Horizons is also really popular at the moment and allows you to visit each other’s islands. Or you could play a board game or card game on video call, just remember to move each other’s pieces!

Have a competition

A lot of us have more time on our hands at the moment and I know a couple of my friends are getting into puzzles and crafts. You can always use FaceTime to challenge each other, see who can finish their puzzle first. You could have a craft-along, try something new together or share your talents and teach each other something new. Or you could have a bake off, cook up a tasty treat, or have a cake decorating contest which you could even do blindfolded to make it more exciting!

Learn something new together

Now almost everyone is doing home-school or working from home, there are plenty of sites for online learning and loads of time to learn something new. Personally I really like Duolingo for learning languages, and you can add friends and compete on a leaderboard as you earn xp, or FutureLearn which offers a range of free online courses throughout the year, where you have the opportunity to chat with your classmates and ask the tutors/lecturers questions in the comment section on each lesson.
